2003: Stuart Barnes & Dewi Morris Former England internationals
and SKY Sports rugby presenters Stuart Barnes and Dewi Morris attended the first St George's Day lunch, and provided the
post-lunch entertainment. Stuart played fro Bath and England before moving into journalism and broadcasting. he is now very
much the face of rugby for SKY Sports and his banter with Dewi Morris created a wonderful on-screen partnership.
|
|
|
Morris was also an England
international and joined up with Barnes at SKY after thier playing careers finished. After the 2003 lunch the two held an
informal Q&A session where they offered their own views on English rugby and Rugby World Cup 2003 which was imminent at
the time. They faced a series of probing questions from the guests and answered candidly and with great humour.

2004: Joe Goodman
& Peter Scrivener The fast-paced one-liners of comic Joe Goodman punctuated the 2004 lunch
as diners struggled to eat while dealing with his quick-fire humour. Joe reaffirmed his comedy reputation with a joke for
everyone and there was nothing that Joe didn't have a gag for. Something of a throw-back compared with some modern comics,
the proof of the pudding was in the laughter that followed every one of his numerous quips and one-liners.

Peter Scrivener was a London Wasps back-row stalwart
and since retirement has a developing reputation as an MC and entertainer. A speaker in 2004, he relied on his rugby experiences
for a little insight and a lot of fun. In 2007 Peter also acted as MC for the Cafe Royal event, where his relaxed approach
was again well-suited to the SGDL style. A natural and confident speaker, blessed by a career full fo amusing tales.

2005: Gareth Chilcott Gareth was our popular speaker in 2005 and reinforced his reputation as one of the great characters of English rugby.
Whether chatting with guests or addressing them after lunch, Gareth's humour came through and he was very warmly received.
Talking of his experiences in the front row for England and the British lions, Gareth was at his self-depreciating best and
funniest when discussing the other characters he played with and against.

2006: Jimmy Hill,
OBE Jimmy needs no introduction. Unique within professional football in having played, coached, managed, he was also
a club Chairman and even ran the line one famous occasion! He is now established as one of our most popular and opinionated
pundits, never afraid to court controversy, as he freely speaks his well-informed mind. Jimmy spoke after lunch and made clear
his fear for England's world cup chances, and the need for an English England manager - wisdom, foresight or cynical experience?

2007: Martin Bayfield Martin played rugby union for Northampton, England and the British Lions and after injury forced his retirement
he turned to after-dinner speaking, using both his rugby days and former life in the police force as the basis for his routines.
Martin was a huge success at our 2007 St George's Day Lunch at the Cafe Royal where he matched and developed his
reputation. Amidst the laughter it's hard to know just how much truth, and how much embellishment, lies behind some
of those tales from police days and international rugby, but either way Martin went down a storm.

2008: Ian Irving Ian is a professional after-dinner speaker, one of the funniest comics on the circuit and was an outstanding
success at the 2008 lunch. A much sought after entertainer, Ian has performed all over the world, in front of every type
of audience and on each occasion his ability to tailor his act to suit has seen him well received everywhere he's gone.
His friendly, easy-going style warms his audience every time and his wide range of material never leaves him at a loss for
gag to silence the most determined heckler. A great guy who won't fail to deliver and will leave the room exhausted but
hungry for more.

|
2009: Adger Brown Our entertainment in 2009 was provided by comedian Adger Brown, a veteran of the after-dinner comedy circuit and
a consummate professional. Adger is one of those naturally funny guys and he supplied a stream of laughs on just about every
topic under the sun and never missed a beat when heckled. In fact those who interrupted him simply provided him with more
comic targets and the entire room enjoyed what was less a battle of wits than a rout!
