We are pleased to confirm that former England cricket captain Graham Gooch will be our guest speaker for the
8th Annual St George's Day Lunch which takes take place on Friday April 23rd 2010 at the Star & Garter
on the river by Putney Bridge.
Graham played 118 tests for England, amassing almost 9,000 runs in a 20-year career
for his country. A commanding player for both Essex and England, he blossomed as national captain, leading by example with
discipline and courage, and thriving under the pressure to become one of the best batsmen in the world. Highlights
include his masterful 333 against India in 1990 (adding 123 in the 2nd innings to boot) and his resilient brilliance in
the face of the all-conquering West Indian fast bowlers throughout the 1980’s. His 154 not out against the West Indies
at Headingley in 1991 is widely regarded as one of the finest test innings ever played in England. We look forward to welcoming
Graham to the St George’s Day Lunch.
We also welcome back Joe Goodman, 'King of the One-liners' as
our Compere for the afternoon. Joe will be your host for the luncheon, managing events in his own inimitable style, no doubt
adding uproarious laughter to proceedings throughout.
Our venue for 2010 is the Star & Garter which boasts
an excellent reputation for fine dining and features an outstanding wine cellar. After drinks outside and in the downstairs
bar, lunch will be served in the first floor dining room where in addition to another fine meal we can look forward to all
the features that have made the SGDL so popular. One guest will see their continued support recognized with the annual ‘George
of the Year’ award and the table who paid for their tickets first will enjoy a Magnum of Champagne for their commitment.
After Graham’s contribution we'll enjoy a few rousing songs before adjourning for evening entertainments.
Founder Mike Moran will no doubt continue to fulfil the role of host in his usual unique style and we can all
look forward to another fantastic afternoon...and early evening...and possibly late night!
